Junior School Outdoor Education & School Trips
Demonstrating our total commitment to experiential learning, we aim to bring the PYP Program to life by developing complementary learning opportunities beyond the classroom.
Curriculum-driven day trips take place at different points throughout the school year to enhance our student learning and sense of community. These school field trips are a mandatory part of the student experience at York. Associated fees are not included in tuition and will be charged to the student’s account.
Our Outdoor Education overnight trips exemplify our school’s motto “Experience Teaches”. During the third week of school, our Grade 5 & 6 students head to Camp Arowhon for a two night overnight camp excursion facilitated by ALIVE Outdoors. This fall camp retreat will help build a strong sense of community, encourage positive and respectful interactions, and create a welcoming start to the school year.
To prepare for overnight experiences, our Grade 4 students participate in a day-and-evening outdoor education excursion at the Norval Outdoor School in June. Students are introduced to all camp routines, activities and traditions in a supportive setting, without an overnight stay.
In early June, our Grade 5 and 6 classes travel to Camp New Moon to celebrate the end of the academic year. These overnight excursions strengthen students’ connections to themselves, others, and the natural environment while developing communication, collaboration, and problem-solving skills. The independence and responsible risk-taking fostered during these trips also help prepare students for the Outdoor Education programming they will continue to experience in Middle and Senior School.
