Middle School Student Life & Belonging
Middle School Student Life
The York School encourages students to play an active role in the life of the school, their local community, and beyond. Students are encouraged to find their voices, participate in decision-making, and to embrace their leadership potential. Through meaningful service-learning opportunities and community partnerships, we strive to develop an increased sense of social responsibility, awareness and empathetic approach to our actions as members of a global society. Demonstrating our commitment to experiential learning, we aim to bring the MYP Program to life by developing complementary learning opportunities beyond the classroom. If you have any questions regarding student leadership, co-curricular programming, student life or service-learning contact Erin Porter, Director of Student Life & Belonging, Middle & Senior School.

Middle School Student Leadership Opportunities
Student Leadership committees and roles provide an opportunity for Middle School students to contribute to various aspects of Student Life at York. In particular, the Middle School leaders focus on collaborating with their peers and the faculty to create a dynamic, engaging and inclusive Middle School community while working alongside senior students to also provide full school programming. Students apply in the Spring for the committees and/or roles that interest them. There is a wide array of positions available that are based on students’ passions and community needs. . Students are chosen to take part – some by general election and others by teacher recommendation– based on their potential to show leadership and by being model school citizens. All leadership opportunities strive to enrich the student experience at The York School by organizing fun community-building events and service initiatives.
Some of the committees and roles available to Middle School leaders include:
Wellbeing committee member
Belonging and Outreach committee member
Homeroom representative
House Captain
Yearbook and Photography committee member
Student Newspaper writer
Eco Committee
Student Ambassador Team
Athletics or Arts Representative
Students in Service
We foster global-mindedness and a sense of social responsibility by creating school-wide and divisional community service initiatives and opportunities. In Middle School, students have curriculum-linked service initiatives that they work on collaboratively with their peers as an extension of the IB Middle Years Program. Students collaborate with their peers on awareness and fundraising campaigns. We respond to issues emerging locally and globally with meaningful service-learning opportunities. We mobilize youth to make change and develop compassion and empathy for others. For more information about Service Learning opportunities in the Middle School, please contact the Director, Student Life and Belonging.
