Junior School
Food Services

Evidence suggests that eating healthy foods can help with academic performance and attention span in the classroom while maintaining positive moods and sustained energy levels throughout the day. Healthy childhood diets reduce the risk of colds and flu and can impact long-term wellbeing.

The York School is committed to providing balanced and nutritious food choices to promote a healthy lifestyle. With this in mind, The York School has partnered with Aramark to develop an exceptional food services program that enhances the student’s experience by providing them with fresh, nutritious food with an emphasis on health and environmental sustainability. Healthy snacks are provided both in the morning and the afternoon.

York’s Commitment:

  • Provide daily hot entrees, following Canada’s Food Guide, which are wholesome and nutritious

  • Focus on providing products that are lower in trans and saturated fats, sugar, and salt

  • Make every effort to ensure that all foods are nut-free

  • Make every effort to customize food for specific dietary needs

  • Oversee and guide students’ meal choices

  • Educate students on reasons for not sharing food

Parental Commitment:

  • Send in balanced and nutritious lunches and snacks for both the morning and afternoon nutrition breaks (OPTIONAL)

  • Ensure that all foods sent to school are nut-free

  • Consider which snacks are sent to school; these should not cause "food envy" among students

  • Reinforce the no-food-sharing policy

  • Use reusable containers whenever possible

  • Send in a reusable water bottle filled with water

Field Trip Policy:

For class field trips, the school will provide packed lunches for all students. Students who do not want the school lunch may bring a packed lunch from home. Students are not permitted to bring money on field trips and, in this way, they will not be able to purchase any food items. Parent volunteers may not purchase food items for any students, including their own, while on the field trip.

Food Delivery Policy:

Junior School students are not permitted to receive food deliveries from restaurants or food delivery services while at school. If a Junior School student wishes to bring a packed lunch or snack from home, the student is expected to bring the food with her/him at the beginning of a school day. If a student forgets a packed lunch or snack, parents and/or caregivers are welcome to drop the packed lunch box and/or snack at the front door.
